Panic attacks – treatment without medication?
I have had panic attacks for 14 years – always at work. I have never taken medication for them and have not told my Dr. about them. Sometimes I have one after another for an hour or more, then they subside and begin again. I try to talk myself down but I am soooo tired of them. I do yoga and meditation after work but my work days are filled with the attacks.
Telling myself that it will be OK, I’m alright, etc. does not help. I am not trusting of the Life process. Anyone have things they say to themselves or do you get up from your desk for a breather? Somtimes that helps, but he moment I am back at my desk they begin again.

You do not need to suffer. I suffered for years since my anxiety/panic was not diagnosed or discovered. My life is so different now……I take Lexapro……..and it has evened out my life tremendously. If things get too rough, I add a tiny bit of Klonipin. I am so grateful for these meds. As I said, you do NOT need to suffer.

I also have panic attacks, but I do take medication for them. It is a real mild sedative and I use it in conjunction with music and meditation. It sounds as if you already use a powerful tool against panic attacks. That is meditation and yoga. Is there a lot of stress involved with your work? That could be what is triggering your panic attacks. Talk to your doctor, if you have one, and get one if you don’t.

i too suffered panic attacks, i was put on 10mg of citalopram, and given CBT (cognetive behavioral therapy) i couldnt praise it enough, it teaches you ways to break the panic down understand it and then… control it. it worked for me, i mean i really had had enough … and if it wasnt for the CBT i doubt i’d even be here now… give it a try, talk tour doc or find out about private CBT. Good Luck xx

You have the right approach – you meditate and practice yoga, and "talking" yourself out of panic attacks. Sometimes medication does help, at least you know there is a "safety net" out there for you.
However, if you choose not to take any medication, there are plenty of ways to cope with panic attacks. This include positive thoughts, breathing exercises, and visualization. It’s a matter of controlling the onset of panic attacks so they don’t get worse. There is a book that I read, called the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne, that is tremendously helpful with improving my coping techniques. There is also a discussion forum that I can’t live without, call Panic Survivor (www.panicsurvivor.com). There, you will find lots of people who suffer from panic attacks who share their knowledge, coping techniques and offer support. It is not supported by advertising, and it’s a non-profit site.
There are tons of resources out there, and support groups to join. Remember, you are not alone.
