Think for a minute how you feel during a depressive occurence. Do “helplessness”, “hopelessness”, and “loneliness” come to mind? If so, that also seems to be the consensus of many people in the depression forums where I spend a lot of my time.

Depression has a way of causing a psychological “catch-22.” Your gloomy feelings cause you to detach yourself , yet the more you avoid others, the more depressed you feel and the more you withdraw. So what do you do?

Consider for a moment that as human beings we are social animals. Our brains are hardwired for social intercommunication. Therefore, no matter how difficult it might be for you, having a personal connection to those who understand what you are going through and who will help or support you through depressive episodes can be extremely therapeutic. That dynamic is found in a firm support system.

A firm support system consists of a mix of people whose common goal is to offer positive support to the person battling depressive episodes. Your support system can include family, friends, co-workers, spiritual workers, people in the mental health field such as therapists, support groups, and even your doctor. Every individual within your support organization should be trustworthy, loyal, understand your depression and offer unconditional positive regard relative to your situation.

The support that they can offer includes but is not limited to assisting you to take your medication, exercise, maintain a healthy diet, keep your therapy appointments, and maintain a daily schedule.

The benefits of a stable support system include
:
1. Significantly reduces stress – Your stress will begin to ease when you find that you can confide in people who care about you as they listen to what you have to say and offer suggestions or ideas about dealing with your depression. So go ahead and vent without fear of being criticized.

2. Increases self confidence and self esteem – If you are part of a support group, you will be given the opportunity to listen to the problems that other people face with their depression. You will also be given the opportunity to offer any ideas you may have on how they can overcome their issues. As you progress, you’ll feel more valued, important, and loved.

3. Reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness – One of the most important benefits of a support system is that you will always have someone to talk to and partner with in social activities.

Keep in mind that creating a support system can take some time. So in order for you not to feel so distressed, which could intensify your depression, you may want to start building your support system one person at a time. Make sure to ask your doctor or therapist for help to get you started. Also remember that while you need support, you do not need to be enabled. Never expect anyone within your support system to do something for you that you need to do for yourself otherwise your recovery will be hindered, perhaps significantly.

The stress and suffering from panic attacks are the perfect conditions for the occurrence of depression. To beat these two conditions, you should treat them both.
Social anxiety can affect your life in several different ways. It can cause damage to your self-esteem and cause you to feel unlovable or worthless. You can become a burden on the folks all-around you and also began having thoughts of self harm or suicide.
It may be difficult to detect depression in an individual struggling with panic attacks. Both conditions share many symptoms. An incredibly large number of individuals experiencing panic attacks or panic disorder also have problems with depression.
People with depression might have some or all of the following symptoms.
* Frequent sorrow and unhappiness
* Headache and regular illness
* Apathy as well as lethargy
* Low energy
* Tetchiness and mood swings
* Memory issues
* Wakefulness
* Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
Your depression can make issues seem bigger or harder to solve. when someone suffers from panic attacks, depressive disorders can attack more often and much more seriously. If you think you have got depression, you should definitely see a doctor.
Coping with panic disorders and depression can seem over whelming. If you have been suffering through these two conditions, you might believe that all hope is lost. It’s possible you’ll feel isolated, cut off from the world, or even ashamed. If this is you never attempt to conceal it or pretend it doesn’t exist, because these problems will not just go away without you taking action, the panic away program can help you deal with your problems before they can become too large for you to handle.

Ignoring your depression and Panic disorder will only help it become worse. You may also be attempting to regulate your problem with drugs or alcohol, but that won’t help, the truth is it is extremely likely to cause more issues. You may also be considering suicide or self harem. For these reasons, it is important that you get help when possible.
If you think you have issues with depression or panic attacks, don’t try to deal with it alone. Discuss it together with your partner, family, and friends. Learning that you simply don’t need to suffer by yourself could be the first step to overcoming your circumstance.
Managing despression symptoms and panic disorder isn’t easy, but you aren’t alone and you are not the first person to need help. There are many different services just waiting to help you, and many treatment options which will enable you to recover and live a normal life again.
You might be surprised how easy it could be to cure Social anxiety disorder once you make the decision to get help. You don’t have to suffer in silence. Get help today, to ensure you can live the normal life which you deserve.

If you have suffered from ringing ears, you know how annoying the condition can be. You never know when it occurs, and how loud it is going to be when it strikes again. However, you probably remember when the condition occured first time.

There are many reasons that may cause ringing in the ears. Exposure to loud noises, ear infections, disturbances in blood circulation near ear origins, and many medications are some of the most common ones.

Official term for ringing ears is tinnitus. Tinnitus is common among all age groups, even though it is typically associated with people over 50 or 60 years old.The condition is not going to kill you, but it can cause many problems for you.

Did you know that depression and tinnitus go often hand in hand? If you have tinnitus you are at higher risk of becoming depressed, and vice versa. It can be hard to establish whether you are depressed because of your tinnitus, or is your tinnitus caused by the depression.

Because there is no known cure for tinnitus, often the sufferer just needs to learn how to leave with the condition. For some people it is harder than for others. However, there are some methods that can help to ease the symptoms.

If your tinnitus is accompanied with depression you need to see your phycisian as soon as possible. It may be hard to find all the answers, but it can be possible to find ways how to deal with the problem.

At its worst the ringing in the ears is so loud that it significantly weaken the quality of the sufferer’s life. In that case also the risk of depression increases. However, the patient doesn’t necessarily understand that, and it should make clear for them.

Home remedies are helpful and most physicians can suggest some things to try. They might ask you to have a hearing test or check your balance to see if that is being affected. An MRI of the ear area of the head is useful to rule out any other problems.

Most of the time it is a simple problem and one that most people can learn to live with. The important thing is to remember that depression is serious and you should ask for help. It is nothing to be ashamed of and the ringing in the ears can be a large contributing factor to this problem.

Asking help is not always easy. If you have a really close and trusted friend, you can first talk with him or her. Then you could together contact to a professional help. Sometimes it is easier to get help with someone you already know and trust.

Even though the evidence of depression might be all too obvious for you, depression isn’t real. If you’re suffering from depression, you’re only imagining it because depression is directly linked to your subconscious mind’s obsession with useless thoughts that were impressed upon it during your childhood years. It is normal for your subconscious mind to focus on the past – everyone’s does – it’s simply that the crap that yours is paying attention to is probably a little (or a lot) abnormal. Of course, that’s not your fault – your subconscious mind was impressed with those thoughts by others, people and events that made you feel worthless, guilty, dejected during those childhood years.

Whilst it’s normal for your subconscious to focus on out-dated deeply-rooted memories, it’s doing you damage – you can see it and feel it in your daily life. Again, mustn’t feel bad about this – everyone’s subconscious mind is doing the same damage – at least you have the advantage over other normal people in realizing that you have a problem.

However, the problem is completely down to what your subconscious mind is paying attention to. You must tear your mind away from those self-destructive thoughts and redirect your attention to the one place and time that is actually real, the only time and place that you can fully live – the present moment. If you succeed in turning your attention to the here and now you’ll experience something that you probably have never experienced before – depression is an illusion, there’s no such thing as fear or worry, there’s only a world full of possibilities and opportunities – and quantum physics proves that that wonderful world will respond to your hopes and dreams.

Pills or medicine won’t enable you experience the difference between reality and the illusion of stress – they may well make the pain go away for a while but your subconscious mind will always wander back to the old, out-dated thoughts that aren’t real but just an imprint of a past long gone. The only way that you will experience reality – one devoid of depression – is to learn how to clear your mind. This is no big deal because, as a child, you had a totally clear mind – that’s how those bad feelings were impressed upon you in the first place. All you must to do now is re-train yourself to focus on what your five senses are telling you, right here, right now – without adding your subconscious mind’s warped interpretation onto the facts.

I believe that the best way to relearn how to pay attention to the reality of the present moment is meditation – preferably, for starters, guided meditation. It will take you a while to get used to it, you may find it difficult, but a little commitment will bring about the incredible benefit of your being able to live your life to the full.

Years ago I owned a dog named Sparkles. He was a cross between a Cocker Spaniel, Poodle and Beagle. Sparkles loved to play and he was a very loving animal. He lived for 13 years. I don’t know what it is about dogs but they definitely can sense when their masters are experiencing a problem. Sparkles was no exception. I remember Sparkles fondly because it was he who got me through some of the worst battles I had had with clinical depression, if only for a short amount of time. If you suffer from clinical depression, I’m sure you can appreciate the fact that even some relief from the emotional grip that depression can have on you is better than none at all.

Remembering my time with Sparkles lead me to do some research on the therapeutic effects that animals, particularly dogs, can have on people with clinical depression. What I uncovered was extremely interesting and I’d like to share some of that information with you. If you suffer from depression, especially clinical depression., I’m sure you’ll find this enlightening.

Scientists have spent a considerable amount of time studying animals, particularly dogs, and their therapeutic effect on individuals with physical and emotional issues. So if you enjoy dogs, please consider the following 5 healing advantages of dog therapy on clinical depression:

1. Provides unconditional love and affection – Nothing that I know of can lift a person’s mood more than to be loved and accepted unconditionally. I don’t know of any human being who could offer the amount of unconditional love, not to mention patience, like a dog can. Whenever I’d come home and no matter what mood I was in, Sparkles was always delighted to see me. The minute I’d sit down, he’d jump up on my lap and lick at my face. Then he’d look at me with those “I love you daddy “eyes and he’d want to play. How could I not feel better after that? Treat your dog right and you’ll enjoy every minute of the experience.

2. Redirects cognitive focus – Luckily it is impossible for us to have depressive and positive thoughts at the same time. Having a dog creates a sense of responsibility. Any positive experience with your dog such as feeding, cuddling, walking, and playing will create a cognitive switch from depressed thoughts to a more positive focus on your dog. It was primarily during play time with Sparkles that I felt the best because I gave him my full attention.

3. Increases physical activity – One of the best exercises if not the best exercise for depression is walking. Walking naturally raises our mood. Dogs need to be walked and of course Sparkles was no exception. In fact, Sparkles, like most dogs, loved to be walked. I typically walked Sparkles three times a day. When I felt especially depressed, I walked him more than that. The combination of walking plus refocusing my thoughts on Sparkles really helped me to overcome my depressive symptoms. It can work for you as well.

4. Reduces isolation – Very few things in life are certain. One thing that is absolutely certain however is that as long as your dog is alive, he will always be your constant companion. Before Sparkles became part of our family, I would typically withdraw and isolate myself from everyone, including my wife,.whenever I had a depressive episode. If you have depression, I’m sure you may be all too familiar with loneliness and withdrawal. Believe me, having a dog around will change that. Once Sparkles arrived, my loneliness virtually disappeared and I isolated myself less frequently. After all, my wife enjoyed playing with the dog too, so we were able to do that together.

5. Reduces feelings of personal worthlessness – Once you own a dog, any feelings of personal worthlessness you might have felt during a depressive episode, should begin to erode, at least to some extent, rather quickly. After all, your dog will depend on you for almost everything. That dependence should create a sense of purpose because you’ll feel needed.

You probably understand by now, that in order to enjoy the therapeutic effects of a dog, or any animal for that matter, you must like being around animals. Additionally, any animal that can be held, petted, or cuddled, can provide you with just about the same therapeutic effects as a dog.

Now, please don’t run out and buy a puppy or dog right away. If you do seriously consider getting a dog, I would suggest that you take the time to volunteer at your local animal shelter. If you have a relative or friend with a dog, ask to dog sit for awhile. That way you’ll have a better idea of what it’s like to have a dog as a buddy and companion.

FYI: Depression self help is something most people try first when depression starts to show its ugly head. Depression will make your fantastic life seem dull and un interesting.

Dont get me wrong, there are things which will help weaking your symptoms, but as you probaly know.. the true struggle arises once you feel down and out hopeless and need to take action to relieve your depressed state.

A few years ago when i was deep in my depressed state, my day to day tasks and routines felt damn near impossible to complete. My friend, i know taking action while depressed can seem impossible. But taking effective mental action is your special key to depression self help.

Yea, yea, yea.. you probaly rather recieve help from our all knowing Lord right? But let me explain 1 thing to you. Our Lord helps those who helps there selfs. The fact being, depression will not just up and float away with time. It takes actions from you to handle and remove depression.

You must take action while your in your depressed state rather than just accepting your depression. Hope is needed to create a flame for us to feel better about our selfs. Though it feels theres no way out, you always have options.

Below are 3 of my golden depression self help tips which you should use to blow away the dark clouds of depression to expose everything good and positive in your life my friend.

*1 Try expressing your feelings in a diary or journal-

This is great for venting and getting things off your chest which you have experienced during the day. FYI: depression is mostly turned on by situations we experience in our life’s. Without sitting down and carefully reviewing the emotions which these unwanted events create can cause deep down suppressed anger and rage which goes hand and hand with your depressed state of mind.

*2 Talk about what your feelings to a kind and understanding friend or family member-

Heck sometimes a kind empathetic stranger works wonders.
This is not an easy task but it can provide effective help. A lot of people dont have friends and family which will provide a good listening ear which is why a stranger may work better.

But if you are 1 of the lucky few who has a good friend or family member, GREAT! Another great option would be going to Google and looking for a good support group in your local location. People who have been through what your dealing with have the power to sheed light on alot of things which can be a true life saver in providing help and hope.

*3 Search the internet for powerful reads and articles which will help you understand your situation. Heck, isnt that how you found this article?

Im typing this article because i know depression can be pure hell, i have been in your shoes and im trying my best to help everyone dealing with this horrible mental condition. 1 of the BEST options for depression self help is easy as going online and reading the wealth of free information.. best of all, ITS FREE!

I want you to always tell yourself that your depressed state will fade away. This isnt the end of your world, look at this more as a new begining. If you can shift your focus back to the reality of a light at the end of a tunnel, taking additional actions to provide help for yourself will be easier.

Find important things to know about Sage VT2 fly rod – make sure to study this web site. The times have come when proper info is really only one click of your mouse, use this chance.

Hey, how ya doing today? Are you depressed?
In case you didnt know, there are 7 types of depressive. Lets get to it!

1. Major Depressive Disorder-

When i say the terms depression or even clinical depression , i am referring to major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder which can leave you feeling depressed, down and out (this is the type of depression i suffered from). Interest i normally enjoyed fell to the back burner. I was getting about little to no hours of sleep a night max at the worst end.

It was hard for me to concentrate and thoughts of destroying myself ran across my head on a daily (this is extremely hard for me to talk about). A lot of these symptoms lasted longer than 2 weeks or more for me, so i was automaticly diagnosed with major depressive disorder.

2. Dysthymic or Dysthymia Disorder-

To sum it up, Dysthymia means ill or bad emotions or thoughts. The terms dysthymia and dysthymic disorder is attached to a moderated state of depression.

3. Bipolar depression or Disorder-

If you suffer from bipolar disorder , there will be periods of elevated moods, called manic episodes or attacks, followed by depression. The wild thing is, the mood swings can run on a “high to low” level from mild mania to more severe highs. Sometimes the mania events can last for hours.. maybe days.. or maybe weeks.. or maybe even months before the dark cloud of depression returns. Let me ask you a question.. DO YOU HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER ?

4. Postpartum Depression -

FACT: Being pregnant will bring about many hormonal shifts for females and cause postpartum depression. These shifts sometimes will change your mood.

5. Seasonal Affective Disorder-

Do you experience depression, sleepless nights, out of control weight gain and cravings for fatty foods during cold months. But feel great as soon as the hot months return, theres a chance you might have a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder or (SAD).

6. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder-

The most common depression symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or (PMS) include..

* Fatigue..

* Anxiety..

* Nervous tension..

* Mood swings..

* Depression ..

* Feeling overwhelmed..

* Abdomen or..

* Appetite changes and fatty food cravings.

The wild thing about this is the symptoms may last for several days to 2 weeks. Now when these symptoms reach top potenial.. your healthcare provider will probaly provide you with a diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder or (PMDD).
Let me ask you a simple question.. DO YOU HAVE PMDD?

7. Atypical Depression-

Quick question- Do you experience a enhanced mood when great things happen in your life? Signs of depression include..

* Overeating and..

* Not able to handle rejection.

These are symptoms of a typical depression. This type of depression is confusing to me because it doesnt follow the normal pattern of depression symptoms such as a loss of appetite. Believe it or not, this is a very normal form or depression and if you answered atlease 2 out of the 3 questions i asked you with a yes, you should notify your doctor today!

Did you know that the moment you start feeling depressed is the moment you should start thinking about depression treatment? Depression just wont just go away with time. My advice for you would be to seek professional help from your local doctor or Google a therapist in your area.
But for the time being, here’s some depression help ..

Below are 6 effective tips which can make dealing with your Depression a hell of alot more easy!

1 Working out.

When i would feel the dark cloud of depression raining on my days, i would get active and go for a brisk 30-40 minute walk in the mornings, or whenever i needed to clear my head! hell, you could try dancing, or playing sports. Sure, i know you may not feel like being active.. but you must make yourself push forward.

The positive side is once you get in the grove of exercising, it will become an enjoyable, everyday habit! FACT: Aerobic exercise, and yoga can help relieve the gloomy feelings of depression. Try going to Google and looking up yoga websites for effective yoga positions.

2 Good nutrition is key.

At 1 point in time depression really had a negative affect on my eating habits. My eating habits spiraled out of control. I was not getting the right nourishment from all the junk food i was consuming which didnt help the matter at all. Once i switched to a more healthy diet, my energy really shot through the roof.

My diet consist of..

* Plenty of fruits.

* Vegetables and..

* I eat 3 nutritious meals a day!

3- Did you know that identifying problems wins half the battle?

Try identifying problems which may have contributed to your depression. Once you figure out why your feeling down, try talking about it to a close friend or family member. If your not comfortable with this yet, try starting a journal and writing down how different situations in your day affects you over all.

4 Take action to solve problems-

NEVER BE AFRIAD TO ASK FOR HELP! Enjoying yourself with your friends and family can really ease the dark clouds of depression. Just think, your friend or family member might even be able to help you find ways to rise above your fight against depression.

5 Try being creative as possible-

If God has blessed you with singing talent, exercise that skill. Alot of positive feelings will start to flow once your doing something your skilled at or enjoy doing. For me, i have found that a good comedy movie really helps lighten the mood and eases stress. Depression can have you feeling like there’s no hope.. never forget about your strengths and skills. That’s what makes us unique.
The 1 thing i want to stress to you is patience.. please be patient with yourself. Depression will take take to heal, but it is curable.

Dealing with intense depressive episodes is never an easy task. While each episode may vary in frequency and severity, one thing is for sure, your spouse will be left physically and psychologically drained and so will you, especially if you’ve been through a number of those episodes with your spouse. You’re caught between a psychological and emotional rock and a hard place. You love your spouse but you’re at your wit’s end because you don’t know what to do for your spouse or yourself. As a result you may be seriously thinking about a separation or divorce.

There is no doubt that depression, especially clinical depression, can devastate a marital relationship. The depressed spouse starts to physically and emotionally pull away leaving the other spouse confused, angry, afraid, and alone. The spouse who is not depressed may soon begin to feel alienated from the others affections and perhaps insist that the depressed spouse just “snap out of it ” thereby intensifying the depression. As a result the gap between the spouses grows wider eventually ending the relationship.
.
That was just one example. There are many more but they virtually all lead to the same outcome. My second marriage ended primarily because of my depression. However, the good news is that yours does not have to. Many spouses take the time to learn what is important to get through the depressive episodes and overcome the symptoms of depression so they can rebuild their marital relationship. You can too.

Here are 7 guaranteed approaches for you to help your depressed spouse:

1. Learn about clinical depression – There are different types of depression. In order for you to help and support your spouse to the best of your ability you need to learn and be aware of the signs and symptoms of clinical depression also known as major depressive disorder which is the severest type of depression. Some of the symptoms include feelings of sadness or unhappiness, irritability or frustration even over small matters, loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, crying spells for no apparent reason, and frequent thoughts of death, dying or suicide.

2. Encourage treatment – If your spouse has not yet been diagnosed as being clinically depressed but shows any of the signs you need to gently but firmly encourage your spouse to seek treatment. Then set up an appointment for you and your spouse to talk with your doctor. If you have a husband showing signs of clinical depression, you might have to be a bit more firm with him because many men believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness. He may resist at first, but it is important to let him know that the only way he is going to get better is by getting treatment and continuing with it.

3. Be supportive, not enabling – By all means make suggestions, offer encouragement, and give praise to your spouse whenever necessary but never do a job that needs to be done by your spouse in order for him/her to start feeling better. One thing that both of you certainly do not need is for your spouse to become dependent on you to do what he/she needs to do. For example, if you’ve both made it a goal for your spouse to get out of bed every morning and eat breakfast at the kitchen table, do not bring the breakfast to your spouse in bed. That would destroy the entire purpose of treatment. The only way anyone who is clinically depressed can ever begin to overcome their symptoms is if they are proactive.

4. Suggest a support group – A meaningful way for you to help your spouse, during what often turns out to be a very tumultuous time, is for you to suggest that your spouse join a support group. People who are clinically depressed often feel alone and isolated. Meeting others with the same mood disorder or other emotional issues typically relieves that feeling of loneliness and isolation. Sharing feelings and experiences plus making connections will usually make a person feel better about life in general.

5. Begin walking with your spouse – There are many physical and psychological benefits associated with walking. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking a day will do wonders for your spouse’s mood as well as yours. Walking actually increases the amount of serotonin (a neurotransmitter regulating the feeling of happiness in the brain) enabling us to feel better. Walking is also a wonderful way to show your support. Remember however, there is a pretty good chance that initially your spouse will not want to walk. If so, that’s fine. Just be encouraging and offer to go for a walk again after several days.

6. Be patient – I know that this can be easier said than done. Try to remember that your spouse is behaving eccentrically because of the depression. If you are still having a hard time remember why you fell in love with your spouse in the first place. Also remember why you got married. The spouse you fell in love with and married is undoubtedly still there but the depression is hiding the real personality.
.
7. Take care of yourself – I could not begin to tell you how many forum posts I’ve read where the spouse who is not depressed simply burns out, becomes incensed, and is ready to call it quits. As the “healthy” spouse you absolutely have to take care of yourself. If your spouse has upset you, you need to let him/her know. There is a way to express your feelings by being tactful and still getting your point across. Do not let your feelings build up inside of you. That could, and very often does, lead to disaster. Maintain your own life. Continue to keep your own appointments and see your friends. Nurture yourself by eating right and exercising. I highly recommend joining a support group for yourself and if you need to, by all means see a counselor or therapist as well.

If you need to go over these steps again please do so and then begin to implement them as soon as possible. In point of fact, the more you deal with your spouse’s depression together as a team, the more likely you are not only going to stay together with your spouse but the more likely you’ll enhance your marital bond as well.

Awhile back I was diagnosed with hypertension otherwise known as high blood pressure. My doctor told me to modify my diet and to begin an exercise program. He also said that if I lost weight my blood pressure should begin to stabilize and eventually I could come off the medicine that was prescribed. I knew I needed to lose weight and I wanted to be around in this world for many more years to come. So the exercise program I chose was walking. All I needed was a proper pair of walking shoes and I was good to go. Besides there are so many great benefits to walking, that I decided to give it a try.

Originally I walked for about 10 minutes a day, but it was a brisk walk Over a period of about six months , I was able to increase that time to where I am today, 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week. I’m aiming for 60 minutes but that will take time. Of course, I experienced many of the physical benefits associated with walking, too many to mention here. However, I also experienced one major emotional benefit that should be of meaningful interest to you if you have depression. From the very first day I started walking, not week, not month, but day, I actually felt better when I ended my walk than before I started it.

I knew the reason for this sudden elevation in my mood had to do with walking because I did not change my medicine and I had no counseling for a number of years. I figured if walking helped me when my depression was pretty much in remission, it could really help the person who is still dealing with it.

If you’re like me and you have clinical depression, the levels of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well being) in our brain are at lower levels than the average persons. However, any regular exercise, including a brisk walk, causes the levels of serotonin in our brain to increase and we feel better. No extra medicine, no extra therapy, just plain good old fashioned walking.

So get those walking shoes on and go out there. However, before you go, read the following 5 reputable means to walk off depression:

1. Start walking for 10 minutes – Usually when most people think of walking they figure they have to walk for a long period of time on a daily basis in order to start to see the benefits in terms of weight loss. That may be true if your number one goal is to lose weight. But as a person who has depression your number one goal should be to start feeling better. The good news is that you can start feeling better within a matter of minutes as long as you take a brisk walk. If 10 minutes is too much for you to start with, then begin with 5 minutes and build up from there. Build up to at least to 10 minutes a day, 3 times a week.

2 . Be in the moment – Fortunately for us, our brains can only concentrate on one thing at a time. That is why we cannot have negative thoughts while we are focusing our mind on what is going on around us at the moment we are walking. So while your serotonin levels are increasing, notice the kids playing on the street, the feel of the wind against your face, and make sure you look up in the sky for the clouds and the airplanes. You’ll be surprised at how quickly the time goes by and how good you’ll feel.

3. Get back to nature – If there is a park, forest preserve, or any other location in your neighborhood where you can get back to nature, then by all means take advantage and walk there. Use four of your five senses to focus your thoughts on and really experience everything around you. Look at the birds, smell the fresh air, listen to the wind, and touch the trees. The more you are engaged in your surrounding environment the better you will feel.

4. Listen to some music – If you’re able, listen to some music as you walk. Make sure that the music is upbeat, none of that sad stuff that could put you into a deeper depression. Focusing your mind on the music not only relieves depression, it’s a great way to relieve stress as well. Tapes that are made especially for walking can be found online or in fitness stores.

5 Find a walking buddy – This really can be important if depression has caused you to isolate yourself from others. Social support is extremely important in order for you to fight your depression head on. Ask a close friend or relative to walk with you. Having someone to support you can really help you stay motivated especially on those days when your depressive symptoms are working to get the best of you.

I understand that walking might take some effort on your part. Many people who suffer from depression, especially clinical depression, simply do not want to get out of bed let alone go outside and walk. But the truth of the matter is this, if you want to kick your symptoms of depression to the curb, you have to be proactive. Nobody can walk for you. You need to do it yourself.

Having said that, remember to talk to your doctor before you begin your walking program. Also don’t forget that walking is not a substitute for the other treatments of depression. You’ll still need to take your medicine, go to therapy, or both. Walking is however a wonderful compliment to these other standard treatments. So get out there, get that serotonin flowing, and enjoy feeling better. Happy walking!
