Of course there are many kinds of music and not all will necessarily relieve your stress. Music often exhibits a steady beat as does your heart. It has been noted that slow music can actually slow your heartbeat causing you to relax. A low sound volume would also be less stressful than loud music. Playing music that you especially enjoy, perhaps classical music, may command your attention diverting you from other cares.

Music often consistes of intricate harmonies wherein many instruments, including vocals, produce a highly pleasing effect. This is quite different compared with noise, such as the screeching sound of chalk on a blackboard or the bone-rattling sound of a pneumatic drill tearing up pavement outside your window.

Also, if you are a musician, playing your instrument may bring you the great pleasure of accomplishment, bringing much relaxation. Was it Congrieve who said that music has the power to soothe the savage breast? Or was it the savage beast?
